What is a Flexible Silicone Heater?

Flexible heaters can bend and contour to your specific application requirements. They can be attached to flat or curved surfaces to allow for better and more effective transfer of heat. The ability to affix the heaters directly onto the surface they are heating makes them ideal for equipment where standard operating conditions would prevent usage of conventional heating methods.

Heating elements encapsulated in silicone rubber are flexible and provide protection against moisture, chemicals, and are often more robust than other heating solutions. Silicone offers high electrical insulating properties and is also tolerant of a wide range of temperature extremes. 

The etched foil element provides uniform heat distribution across the entire surface of the silicone rubber flexible heater. Combining the uniform heating characteristics with the ability to bond the heater directly to the surface, yields more efficient heat transfer than other solutions. 

Pressure-sensitive adhesive or similar heat-conducting materials can be used to directly attach the heater to a wide variety of surfaces.

What is a Drum heater and what are they used for?

Heaters manufactured for heating or maintaining the temperature of the contents of a drum or pail come in a variety of configurations. Most commonly used are electric drum heaters due to their flexibility and ease of operation. Some designs fit under a drum using the natural convection of the heated contents to circulate the heat throughout the drum. Heating a drum of fluid is a slow process depending on the viscosity of the contents.  More often, flexible drum heaters are used in conjunction with bottom heaters or themselves to heat and maintain the temperature of the contents. Flexible bands with heating elements are wrapped around the outside surface of the drum or pail.  These wraps come into direct contact with the outer surface conducting heat through the surface to the materials held inside the drum.

The HSSD acronym refers to “Heat Silicone Side Drum,” used by the manufacturer to specify a particular type of electric drum band heater that uses industrial-grade silicone rubber.  This solution is highly durable with high-temperature tolerance.  Durability is essential in industrial applications where electric heating bands can be subject to abrasion and chemicals.

A common need for drum or pail heaters is to maintain the viscosity of materials to be pumped or gravity fed from the drum, such as soap, fat, varnishes, oils, sugars, or similar products.  These products often cannot be pumped or fed at room or lower temperatures.

What is the surface temperature of a Wire Heater?

Depending on the application and heat conduction, wire heating elements can generate very high surface temperatures and are therefore suitable for use in applications that require high power density. A general maximum temperature is difficult to define.

Is it possible to operate Wire Heating Elements without an additional temperature fuse?

No. Wire heating elements require temperature monitoring to protect against overheating.

Can I operate Wire Heating Elements at a wide voltage range?

No. Wire heating elements are designed for a defined nominal voltage, which must not be exceeded during operation.

Due to Ohm's law, the power changes depending on the voltage.
